On January 4th, 2019, an unknown Instagram user decided to post a picture of a brown egg. Everyone was talking about it, wondering why someone would do this in the first place. But when they read the caption, all was explained. Of course, eggs are just an everyday breakfast food- but breakfast had nothing to do with this.

It all started when Kylie Jenner posted a picture of her five-day-old baby, Stormi Webster, on February 6th, 2018. The post was created to announce the baby’s name to her 123 million followers and fans. With everyone adoring the picture of the baby holding her mother’s thumb while asleep, it had the most likes on Instagram- over 18 million.

Almost a year later, the unknown Instagram user posted the picture of the egg; and all to prove a point. The caption read, “Let’s set a world record together and get the most liked post on Instagram. Beating the current world record held by Kylie Jenner (18 million)! We got this.”

In the past few weeks, people have been showing and telling their friends and followers about the egg, telling them to go “like” the egg.

By January 13th, 2019, the egg reached its goal of over 18 million likes. Everyone was congratulating the egg in the comments and posting pictures of it on their stories for their own followers to see. Most are thinking that the purpose of this is to show that if we all work together, then we can make something useless become important.

Also, the egg didn’t just beat the world record, but it crushed it. On the morning of January 14th, the egg reached over 30 million likes; along with over 1.2 million comments. By January 15th, it had at least 42 million likes; gaining almost 12 million likes overnight.

Over time, everyone saw that Kylie Jenner seemed very jealous of this egg. On January 13th, she posted a video of her outside with an egg. She started to feel the ground first, saying that it was really hot. Next, she cracked the egg on the ground as if to cook it, then started to laugh at it. The caption of the video reads, “Take that, little egg.” What a childish thing to do, right? Maybe not when you just got beat by an egg. Along with this post, everyone was saying how stupid and useless it was for everyone to put their time into liking or hating on an egg.

Of course, there are two sides to this. The egg supporters are saying, “Congrats!”, “You did it!”, and “What a time to be alive!” when some people just find this egg pretty stupid. They’ve said things like, “What is the point of this?”, “Why would someone even like this?” and so much more.

On one side, we have had many celebrities posting positive things about the egg to encourage their followers to go and like it. Many people have posted on their stories or told others about this egg.

On the other side, we have many people once again posting it on their stories, only this time, the things they say are not so nice. Some liked it even if they didn’t like the idea of it, but still told others about it and said how weird it is. Even if it is just an egg, it is pretty rude to be hating on one.

Once again, starting on January 18th, the Egg user posted a picture of the Egg again, but this time with a crack in the top left corner of it. Four days later, the Egg was posted once more, with more cracks. Once more on the 29th, the Egg looks very close to breaking open.

Some people are thinking that Kylie Jenner will pop out of the egg, while some think it will be the creator of the egg.

As of January 31th, the egg had over 51,000,000 likes. So, let’s just wait to see what this egg brings us in the future.

Update: On Superbowl Sunday, it was revealed that the egg was one who has a face. He “cracked” under pressure of social media. He told his viewers that if anything was wrong, they should tell someone. Chris Godfrey, the one behind the egg, sent out the message that the egg was used to help with mental illness and pressure from social media and stress. The egg’s name was later announced as “Eugene.”

Hopefully, there will be more to come soon.
