Mean Girls, the movie starring Lindsay Lohan as the main character of Cady Heron, is no doubt a widespread and popular movie. From games to T-shirts, the movie has been spread across so many different mediums, it is almost impossible to not at least know of the movie. So it only makes sense to bring the story from the big screen to Broadway.
The musical comes from the same creator as the movie, Tina Fey. Of course, she wasn’t alone in the creation. She had help with music from Jeff Richmond and lyrics from Nell Benjamin.
Since sometime around 2013, a musical adaptation of the iconic movie has been worked on and developed into an amazing show. Rumors of the show have been spiraling since October of 2016, but nothing was sure at that point. That is, until the National Theatre confirmed the D.C venue on December 30, 2016.
As previously mentioned, the show is being put on in both Washington D.C at the National and on Broadway in New York. Washington was how they opened up, and Broadway was the final destination. The show has been on Broadway since April 2018.
The musical is also tied for the most Tony nominations this year with Spongebob the Musical, with 12 nominations each. These include a best lead actress in a musical nomination for Taylor Louderman, a best-supporting actress in a musical for Ashley Park, best performance by an actor in a supporting role in a musical, and best book for a musical for Tina Fey. These nominations have been announced since May 1, 2018.
Despite all these fabulous and worthy nominations, one actress has been completely unrecognized at the Tony’s this year from the Mean Girls cast. This would be Barrett Wilbert Weed, (Janis Sarkisian) who many fans say was completely snubbed this year. Although, it’s very possible this could just be due to the fact that she is still a new face on Broadway, despite her success in all her off-broadway shows.
The show is about the journey of a teenage high school student named Cady Heron, who has moved from Africa to Chicago and is starting public school for the first time. She meets two sets of friends while she is there. Janice and Damien, who despite not being very cool are real people, and the Plastics, a group of popular girls who control the school. When things get crazy, Cady has to realize who her real friends are.
