Fun Fact: UPS Trucks Almost Never Turn Left 3

Kelsey Bisetti

Okay, that headline probably seemed pretty weird, not to mention random. But who doesn’t love random?

Anyways, back to the point of this article. UPS trucks almost never turn left. This seems like a pretty stupid rule, doesn’t it? But this actually saves about ten million gallons of fuel every year! And with an impending global warming, it prevents one hundred thousand metric tons of carbon dioxide from being released into the atmosphere, making it the most economical choice, too.

It may seem like a ridiculous decision; a complete waste of time. But, as it just so happens, it’s not! In fact, though it creates the illusion of a longer route, it shaves minutes or sometimes even hours off your journey.

However, the biggest reason to switch your driving style is safety. Left-hand turns were deemed one of the leading “critical pre-crash events,” or an occurrence that makes a car crash unavoidable. In fact, left-hand turns have been statistically proven to be three times more likely than right-hand turns to hit and kill a pedestrian.

“We don’t need to go in circles all day long by making only right-hand turns. We have tools analyze the number of left-hand turns for each route, and we can work out which ones are avoidable,” says Jack Levis, UPS Senior Director of Process Management.

UPS officials encourage you to make the same conservative choices and work towards a safer, cleaner tomorrow.
