Chelsea Manning’s sentence was recently commuted by the outgoing president. Manning is a transgender woman who was serving a 35-year sentence in Fort Leavenworth, an all-male Army prison after being charged with leaking classified information in June of 2010. She had made a request to be transferred to a civilian prison, which was ignored.
On Tuesday a White House statement said her sentence is to expire on the 17th of May. James Cartwright, the former vice-chairman of the US Joint Chiefs of Staff, was also pardoned. However, Edward Snowden was not.
In an interview, Manning said that her quest for medical care has been distressing her, and is optimistic about the recent progress made. She als0 said that she goes through the day fine, but she burns out as soon as she enters her room. Manning is receiving hormone therapy and other treatment for her gender dysphoria, although she is still prohibited from growing her hair out.
