In a Chinese mall zoo, there lies the “Saddest Polar Bear,” according to the Humane Society of the United States. The Polar Bear’s name, Pizza, lived in the Grandview Aquarium in Guangzhou, China.
Most of its life was inside the filthy enclosure no bigger than 55ft. All that was provided is nothing but food, 2ft of water, and no sunlight.
Being in captivity made the bear develop zoochosis, similar to psychosis. Pizza walked in circles for hours without stopping, hurting itself.
The deprivation of natural habitat caused loneliness and longing for freedom. Usually, Pizza hits the vents or just lies on the floor sadly.
Due to public outcry, Grandview announced in November that Pizza would be temporarily relocated to an undisclosed marine park whare he was born, and his parents are said to still be while his facilities are upgraded.
Peter Li, a China policy specialist for Humane Society International, said, “Our video clearly showed that Pizza was suffering, and we warned the mall that soon his decline would be so apparent that it would be difficult to have him on public display. Without a doubt, the mall has had to act due to tremendous pressure from Chinese and international campaigners, but I fear that Pizza’s poor health is part of the reason too.”
The Humane Society of the United States, set up a fund to shut down the Chinese mall zoo for good. The fund page raised enough money in one week with almost one million signatures, and the bear was offered a home by Yorkshire Wildlife Park as a way to start off their new “Polar Project” where Pizza is able to be free from the cramped enclosure.
Pizza’s fate is still unknown at this time. The Grandview Aquarium also houses many other species in similar states to Pizza.
