In an exciting match on Super Bowl Sunday, the Denver Broncos defeated the Carolina Panthers at 24-10. The game was held at Levi’s Stadium in Santa Clara, California, and while there’s plenty of buzz surrounding Peyton Manning and the Panther’s efforts, social media is raving about other things.
Starting the evening off, Lady Gaga sang a spirited rendition of the National Anthem. Clad in a Gucci sparkly, red jumpsuit that matched her glittering eyelids, teased up hair, and high heel platforms, her patriotic and emotional performance was applauded by many.
Skipping past the first and second quarter of the game, halftime saw Coldplay, Beyonce, and Bruno Mars collaborate on stage in a memorable show. Of course, everyone just wanted to see Beyonce. Coldplay was mocked as the next left shark, and there were complaints on Twitter about opening acts cutting into Beyonce’s performance.
It also looked like Beyonce had a near fall during her dance, but twitter responded by saying “everyone else messed up” and “her performance shook the earth for a second.” It seems like Queen Bey might have stolen the show.
After the Panthers tasted defeat at the clock’s end, their quarterback Cam Newton was shown no mercy as the media labeled him “Crybaby Cam” and used Michael Jordan’s crying face to create memes, GIFs, and jokes. The face was plastered onto Coldplay singer Chris Martin, other players in group pictures, fans, and celebrating Panthers players throughout the game.
Shortly following the game’s end, 51 year old referee Clete Blakeman was named the second MVP by fans after he caught viewers’ eyes during the game. Meanwhile, it didn’t take long before a parody twitter account was made and the hashtag #hotref was popularized.
Apart from the football game, another entertainment feature of the Super Bowl is the new advertisements. Among Super Bowl commercials, celebrity features and comedic elements boosted popularity amid viewers. T-Mobile helped Steve Harvey prove that he really could read a card correctly, and the phone company also invited Drake to promote their network with his song “Hotline Bling” in a separate ad.
Additionally, Kevin Hart earned laughs in a Hyundai commercial by stalking his daughter on her date, while Toyota wowed watchers in a humorous car chase starring celebrities as robbers. We also can’t forget Doritos, whose cute dogs ad and funny ultrasound baby rivaled even the Puppy Monkey Baby.
